Innovation and discovery have always been a proud part of the University of Minnesota’s history. During University Innovations 2012, which took place March 8 at McNamara Alumni Center, 134 university inventors received much-deserved recognition for their discoveries in the past year.
Representing 13 different colleges across the university, the honorees earned a total of 65 patents and 74 licenses in fiscal 2011. The evening included remarks from U of M President Eric Kaler, VP for Research Tim Mulcahy, and Board of Regents Chair Linda Cohen. Jay Schrankler, executive director of the Office for Technology Commercialization, led the award ceremony.
The following remarks do well to capture the spirit of the evening:
“While the challenges are many, inventors like all of you who are being honored at this event are confirmation of the great potential of university research to advance an economy based on innovation.” ~Chair Cohen
“As inventors, as creators, you take big risks and you deserve rewards. … I thank you for translating your work into life-changing products and processes to make Minnesota, the nation and the world a better place.” ~President Kaler
